Welcome back to Tech Service Today's IT Disaster of the Week series where we post the ugliest IT environment our technicians ran into this past week. This week's photo may require you to rack your brain to understand why it's a disaster.

Now before all of you start writing me emails saying "you've finally flipped your lid", let me explain why I am calling this perfectly good horizontal cable manager an IT Disaster. It is for the simple fact that it has not been mounted in a rack.

When I see brand-new cable management products sitting in their boxes, it saddens me as much as seeing a tricycle that is never ridden. Cable managers are such inexpensive, simple, yet elegantly-designed products, whose sole purpose is to keep all your power and data cables neat and organized so they don't block access (or airflow) to your network equipment. So why are cable managers so seldom used by IT professionals?

The most common response I hear is: "I just forgot to include them when I designed the equipment layout for our new rack." To help those people understand just how catastrophic such an oversight can be, I encourage them to flip through previous images from this IT Disaster of the Week series.

As you prepare to start your long Labor Day weekend, think about how refreshing it would be to return to work on Tuesday to find neat, organized racks in your office instead of IT disasters. If you need some outside help to make that vision a reality, just call Tech Service Today to have a skilled technician restore order to your cabling chaos.
