Welcome back to Tech Service Today's IT Disaster of the Week series where we post the ugliest IT environment our technicians run into each week. Our caption for this week's photo is: A Blueprint For Disaster.

As you can see, our photo is actually a rack drawing from a customer. While it shows where every piece of their equipment will be mounted, they forgot an item that can prevent even the best-planned rack from turning into a future IT Disaster:  Cable Management

It's true. Failure to incorporate cable managers into a network rack design is the chief cause of the IT Disaster photos we feature on here every week. (The second most common culprit is when customers fail to use a network rack/cabinet to store their network equipment.)

IT professionals often get so focused on making sure they identify the rack-space where every server and piece of network equipment will reside in their rack drawings that they give little or no thought to all the power and data cables needed to make all that equipment work. And failing to include products that allow you to neatly manage all of those cables is a recipe for disaster. So make sure you include both vertical and horizontal cable managers in every network design.

To learn more tips like this, feel free to download a FREE copy of the TST Rack and Cabinet Buyer's Guide for IT Professionals. (It really is free. We don't even want your email address. Just click the link and it's yours. What do you have to lose?)
