Welcome back to Tech Service Today's IT Disaster of the Week series where we post the ugliest IT environment our technicians ran into this past week.

Today's photo caption is: "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."

What probably started as a nice, neat installation obviously got caught up in a storm of moves, adds, and changes as this network grew. And the result is an atrocious environment that looks like it really could have just dropped from the sky.

If I were a college professor teaching a computer science course and this was one of my student's projects, there wouldn't be enough red ink in the world for me to finish critiquing this multi-faceted IT disaster. But let me start with the most glaring problem: the servers.

The purpose of every network rack is to organize and protect your IT equipment while allowing for proper ventilation. In other words, racks protect the investments you make in expensive network electronics. So why would anyone mount inexpensive monitors/LCDs in their rack, then put their servers on the floor - with the exception of the one perched precariously atop an uninterruptible power supply?

Looking closely at this image, you'll see that only a few pieces of equipment are actually rack-mounted, while the rest are just stacked on one another or hanging from the wall. With so much unused space available in their rack, why do you think this customer chose not to mount all their equipment in the rack - or at least set it neatly on rack-mount shelves? Because they thought it would take to long to dig through the cabling cobweb to get into their rack.

If you don't manage your cabling, then your cabling will wreak havoc on you, your IT staff, and your network for years. Fortunately, it is never too late to fix these disasters. Even if you don't have the time or skills to restore order to your network, the skilled IT technicians available through Tech Service Today can help.
