Welcome back to Tech Service Today's IT Disaster of the Week series where we post the ugliest IT environment our technicians ran into this past week. With this being the last full day of summer, I find it appropriate that this week's photo made me think of our childhood games of MARCO - POLO. That's because I know there is something in this rack that I want to get my hands on...I just can't see it. So I have to blindly feel my way to it.

Some IT professionals are OK with their racks looking like this, saying "It's a little jumbled, but I have everything connected the way I want." Well what happens if the switch or one of the patch panels hidden behind these cables fails? Or if you decide to upgrade one of those devices?

Just disconnecting the cables from the face of any piece of equipment in this rack will be a challenge. But imagine the headache you'll face when you try to extract the device from the rack. With all of the cables connected to the other equipment blocking your access, the normally simple process of swapping out a piece of rackmount equipment becomes a time-consuming, frustrating hassle.

Now imagine how much simpler this process would be if all of the cables were neatly organized in cable managers, preventing any of them from blocking access to your equipment?

Since they are not smart, active devices that control data reliability or speed on your network, choosing the right cable manager is not nearly as important as just using them in your racks.
