Welcome back to Tech Service Today's IT Disaster of the Week series where we post the ugliest IT environment our technicians run into each week.

With a network switch that appears to be swinging from a trapeze, my caption for this week's featured photo is "Don't try this at home, kids!

Upon arrival at this site, our technician learned that this customer saw no reason why they shouldn't mount a traditional rack-mount switch in the shallow, plywood-backed equipment termination cabinet where their other IT equipment is housed. Talk about trying to put a square peg through a round hole.

When you see that a switch or server you have purchased is labeled "rack-mountable", it does not mean any kind of rack (including the coat rack shown in our March 16th IT Disaster). Although in this instance, I may choose a coat rack rather than the way this customer precariously hung this switch by one of its rack-mount ears from a plant hook that was screwed into the top of their termination cabinet.

Before you consider making this kind of mistake, please consider purchasing a network equipment rack. If you need help choosing the right rack for your environment, feel free to download TST's Racks and Cabinets Buyer's Guide

And most importantly, before your network gets so disorganized that you fear it may soon appear in our IT Disaster Of The Week series, call Tech Service Today and request our Cabling Cleanup Services. TST's professional IT Technicians can help restore order to the cabling chaos plaguing any network environment.
