Welcome back to Tech Service Today's IT Disaster of the Week series where we post the ugliest IT environment our technicians run into each week.

We can't call this week's featured photo a total disaster because our customer did purchase a few large-channel horizontal cable managers when they first started outfitting their rack. So why do you think we still consider this rack an IT Disaster?

For starters, our customer mounted a massive horizontal cable manager at the top of their rack to manage 8-strands of fiber optic cable and four CATx copper cables. That is like using a dump truck to transport one grain of sand...total overkill. The thing that confused our technician most is that the cabling mayhem at the bottom of the rack - where they clearly need a horizontal cable manager - has none.

But the final oversight which made this our IT Disaster of the Week is the absence of any vertical cable managers.  If you add the number of distribution cables that are terminated in the five patch panels that are visible to the patch cables connecting those patch panels to the equipment hidden behind the cabling spider-web at the bottom of the rack, you get a total well north of 200 cables. Without adequate horizontal and vertical cable managers, and network of this size - or any size - will eventually become a tangled disaster, just as this one has.

While most IT professionals recognize the need for cable managers, many are more adept at configuring routers and servers than they are at choosing and installing cable managers, and routing their cables through them. And that's OK. Tech Service Today has skilled cabling technicians available to augment your IT staff whenever and wherever you need help.
