Welcome back to Tech Service Today's IT Disaster of the Week series where we post the ugliest IT environment our technicians run into each week.

While the cabling in this environment is relatively clean and well-organized, there is one specific reason that we had to make this image our IT Disaster this week. Who can tell me what's wrong with this IT picture?

This may seem like one of those hidden pictures puzzles, but hopefully you spotted the problem. While all of the IT equipment has been mounted properly, the actual wall-mount rack was installed upside-down. Look at the numbers on the vertical rails.

If this were a run-of-the-mill, open wall-mount frame/rack, then mounting it upside-down would hardly be cause for great concern. But this is a wall-mount equipment cabinet...an enclosure with top and bottom panels designed with ventilation features that aren't nearly as effective when the cabinet is mounted upside-down. For example, the top-panel fan tray was designed to draw hot air out of the top of the cabinet. But in this case, it is pulling the cool air out from the bottom of the cabinet and blowing it toward the floor, while the warmer air up near the ceiling is being pulled down into the cabinet.

In case you have never learned the basic concepts of the IT industry, allow me to share with you every IT professionals most basic & important rule: Heat is the enemy of all IT equipment. By mounting this wall-mount enclosure upside down, this customer turned a well-designed IT cabinet into a little Easy-Bake Oven.

At Tech Service Today, we share a simple philosophy with customers every day: It is never too late to do the right thing.

If you forgot to put cable managers in your rack when you first set it up and it now looks like a giant spider-web, it can be fixed. If you mounted an equipment cabinet upside-down, it can be corrected.
