Welcome back to Tech Service Today's IT Disaster of the Week series where we showcase the ugliest IT environment our technicians ran into this week. While Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke the words that we used as today's photo caption to inspire a nation (and not to encourage IT professionals to hang on until help arrives), our customer must have taken those words to heart because they literally tied knots in their equipment power cords.

We understand that very small networks don't require a full-size server cabinet (network enclosure) or open rack. But we also know how many network problems and failures can result from equipment being stored haphazardly - especially in high-traffic areas where data & power cables gets jostled and pulled.

Today's photo is a prime example. Someone grabbing a ream of printer paper off the shelf could accidentally snag one of the power cords and pull the entire network down on their head. Or, in a more likely (and less dramatic) scenario, they could gently push the cords out of the way so many times that one of them jiggles loose enough for the power to disconnect from a device....like the router.

Without Internet connectivity, this retail store's cloud-based point-of-sale system can not process transactions. And that brings this business to a screeching halt until an IT professional can be dispatched to this location to troubleshoot the problem. When you consider the loss of revenue resulting from system outages, in addition to the cost of the service call by an IT technician, wouldn't it have made more sense to invest in a small wall mount rack to secure and protect the IT equipment?

Since human beings usually will do more to avoid pain than they will to gain pleasure, here is my advice for all you IT professionals: It's better to pay a little now than a lot later.

Rather than choosing not to purchase a rack when you first install your networks because you associate pain with the additional cost of those racks, instead consider how painful it will be if you lose your job because the unprotected equipment you had placed on shelves and under counters in your stores keeps getting accidentally disconnected by clumsy employees, costing your business tens of thousands of dollars each time it happens.
