3 Rules All Healthcare Personnel Should Follow For St. Patrick’s Day

Cabling Susan Cremin Mar 17, 2016

St. Patrick’s day, which was originally created as a Christian feast day in honor of St. Patrick, is a hugely celebrated holiday for every race, creed, color and age, especially in the United States. Everyone celebrates in their own way, from enjoying traditional Irish music, to Irish dancing, to parades, to Irish family get-togethers.

However, most look forward to the drinking revelry at their local bars. But who can blame the American masses for finding an excuse. Finding that one day to let loose and overindulge in a culture where work plays the most dominant part of their society. St. Patrick’s Day is like a nationwide escape from the long work hours, little vacation time, later retirement on top of fears of job insecurity.

What does this have in store for hospitals? One of the busiest days of the year.  Working in the hospital industry is incredibly tough, and highly respectable. A lot of people will agree it takes a certain type of person to devote their life to caring for others. Providing the best care to a person physically and emotionally can be very difficult at times, but highly rewarding in the end. This brings us to the 3 rules all healthcare personnel should follow, especially on this busy day.

  • Always Show Kindness And Compassion, no matter what the situation is or may seem. Sometimes people do things they regret or you do not know the full story or their background. They are now in your hands to help them get back up on their feet, not only physically, but emotionally.
  • Always Protect Your Patients’ Confidentiality Rights. The healthcare industry is highly regulated with strict HIPAA requirements safeguarding the sensitivity and confidentiality of patients. Surprisingly, a high percentage of healthcare personnel and third parties carelessly or intentionally breach these laws. This can include improper disposal of patient information, unauthorized access to a patient’s records, improper discussion of private health information in hallways, and by far the worst, gossip about a patient with co-workers or friends. If patient confidentiality is violated, not only are you betraying your patient's trust, you and your business can potentially face hefty fines and imprisonment.
  • Be Ready And Patient: Get proper sleep, eat prior and bring small healthy snacks to maintain energy throughout the day, focus and be mentally prepared. You have a busy day ahead of you, so if you start to feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath, do what you can to focus, be patient and ultimately fulfill your duties and obligations.

St. Patrick became associated with the term luck by far surpassing his dutiful goals. What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s day than to follow in his footsteps and far surpass your goals; taking the greatest care of your patients who have their utmost faith in you. If you do all this, you truly live up to your job as a saint, being the lucky charm that could save many lives today.
