Welcome back to Tech Service Today's IT Disaster of the Week series where we showcase the ugliest IT environment our technicians ran into this past week. Our caption for this week's photo is: "Only you can prevent forest fires."

While I must credit Smokey Bear (and the U.S. Forest Service) for that fire prevention slogan and admit that it may not be the most fitting caption we've ever used, it's still extremely relevant because one of the best methods for avoiding any fire is to be conscientious and not careless. And this photo is a great case in point.

This customer had the presence of mind to protect the data cables connected to the printer and POS system sitting on/under the counter in the background by running them through two FloorTrak cable covers. But the orange electrical extension cord that takes power to those devices sits unprotected on the floor between those PVC channels. And while the extension cord is partially concealed by the carpet on top of it, it certainly isn't protected.

If you are thinking this probably isn't a big deal, then it's only because you didn't see the heavy-duty casters on the office chair that gets rolled back and forth over these cables several dozen times each day. Once the jacket on that electrical cord splits, it's only a matter of time before the ancient carpet on top of, and the hardwood floors below that cord provide the fuel needed to create a devastating fire.

It is when we ignore obvious sources of potential problems like this - especially when they are staring us in the face (or in the feet as is the case here) - that we actually encourage the creation of our own IT Disasters. So this week I encourage all you IT professionals to do your part to ensures fires don't start.
